I am a programming specialist by day, and a local freelance engineer by night.
I develop custom electronics, and software as a hobby. I would love the opportunity to discuss my current and previous projects (and how they relate to this idea) in more detail, with those interested, at a later date.
My idea is for a local small business.
It would start out with offering computer and smart phone repair services. Then soon moving into web and mobile software development, and also tailored electronics.
What services/products this business would have to offer is not what i think makes it "stand out" but it's marketing strategy and free services/products would.
Given the current job market, i think it is pretty obvious the majority of the jo bs out there are technological. From programming enterprise applications, to data entry (typing) for other companies. My business would offer free training courses and certifcate preperations in the following fields:
- Java Programming
- Web Design
- Intro to Networking
- Basic Computer Repair and Diagnostics
- Advanced PC Usability
- Intro to 3D design
- Various Mainstream Software Training
I am involved in a colunteer program with IBM and Eaglevision volunteering to help others learn how to use a computer. This is very basic stuff:
- How to use a mouse
- How to browse the web
- How to make a word document
- and Other Stuff like this
While doing this, and thinking about all the job offers i get and open professional jobs i see, it dawned on me that there is a demand for free computer training.
Not only would my business offer such training, but would also take the able students into more advanced material in order to prepare them to enter into our current job market.
These training courses would not only benefit the community greatly, but also act as marketing for my business. It would not be just a "get my name out" kind of marketing, attracting anyone to come, but rather would attract loyal and supportive customers.
Start up marketing would be done with Craigslist ads, poster board flyers, word of mouth, and online phone book listings.
Leasing office space would be the most ideal way to start, but if I do not have the funds, these free courses can be taught out of free conference rooms available at the downtown library, and the repair shop would include mandatory residential pick up and drop off (we come to you) at no extra cost.
Since this is computers and software, I beleive with the right legal support, I could begin to hire minors who are interested in technology and provide them with the experience and training necessary to hit a lucrative job market with the ball rolling right after High School.
This business would also have a very unique niche in the electronics market. Using a 3D printer and other fabrication methods, we would be able to offer tailored electronics. The same way that those fortunate enough to be able to afford tailored suits, one could purchase tailored bluetooth headsets, phones, mp3 players, etc. We would use the electronics the customer has already purchased, and fashion them specifically to the customers needs. Essentially gutting their electronics and turning them into custom made devices.
This is an idea i truly beleive in being able to sustain itself, and benefit the surrounding community of where it is founded. Allowing and encouraging future opportunities of expansion.
Initial Start up costs:
- $50 for paper and various supplies to produce professional flyers and business cards
- $42 for LLC business paperwork
- $120 for 1 year 1800 number (more professional than a local phone number and is easier to keep this and reroute to new numbers that having to stick with one phone number for the life of the business)
- $89 for two Car Magnet Signs
Future Development Costs:
- $2300 for 3D printer
- $4800 for professional computer lab (12 ~$400 desktop computers)
- ~ $6000 for (midgrade) professional office space 1 year lease
I am more than willing to accept anything I can from this competition. Be it advice, finances, or general support.
Thanks for reading everyone =)
